The beginning of each semester is a flurry of activities. The undergrad chapter is getting returning students up to speed and reaching out to new students on campus. This usually means several days engaging people with spiritual conversations throughout the campus. Because of these conversations some students get involved, others don’t, and most of the time we don’t know if we make an impact with those that don’t get involved. This semester is different.
Last month there was a bomb threat at the Purdue Co-rec. That day Purdue IV wasout using our Red Cup proxe station to start conversations. Susan, a senior, got into a conversation with a very interesting character. He was wearing a hat with dreads attached to it and dark sunglasses. Susan stopped him on his way into the library, and chatted with him. He shared about his longing for love, how his mom was a Christian and his dad was Hindu. He expressed confusion about faith, and seemed interested in talking more about it, and left his contact information with us. After their conversation, Susan noticed that he walked out of the building instead of going into the library where he was initially heading.
Later, Susan heard of the threat at the Co-rec [where she works]. At a debrief meeting, her boss told the Co-rec staff that a man with a hat with dreads and sunglasses with a big backpack was the one who left the backpack in the co-rec that was a suspected bomb. The bag had the makings of a bomb, batteries, wires, etc, but it was not assembled. Police also found searches in his computer history for how to assemble a bomb. I'm not exactly sure how God used the proxe conversation to influence him, but I don't think it is a big leap to say that the red cup conversation impacted his agenda for the day. It’s crazy to learn how God powerfully works, even when you don't know He is moving.
