The end of every school year brings a special time called Chapter Focus Week [CFW]. This year 14 students went from the undergrad chapter at Purdue. God always reveals himself during these weeks, but this year God did far more than we could have imagined. This was Mike’s last event as the lead staff for the undergrad chapter, as he transitions into his new role. Mike couldn’t be more excited for the place where he is leaving the undergrad chapter.
Before CFW, Mike and Dylan [the new lead staff for the chapter] were excited about the group they were bringing. It seemed like the people there would be excited about community, and could have a radical impact on the chapter culture. The new leadership team was one of the many highlights of the week. Mike spent his week helping Dylan lead these six students. They spent time working on the chapter vision, goals, stuctures, and plans for the fall. In the midst of all of that they also spent some significant time thinking through their own spiritual development as leaders. Hyesoo, sophomore, really blossomed during the week. Hyesoo was first connected to Mike when he went to speak at another fellowship on campus about evangelism in January. She then joined us for our Asian American student conference, and caught a vision for starting an AA ministry at Purdue. During CFW she hung in there as the only female on the leadership team. She taught the guys how to have fun, and as an RA helped us think strategically about our structures and events. Jane is an incoming freshman whose parents were involved with InterVarsity. Mike got connected to her during a visit to Purdue, and eventually invited her to come to CFW. She decided to join and clicked well with the Purdue students. During CFW Jane felt like God was asking her to start a small group in her dorm as a freshman! What a good gift from God! Albern, junior, was in a track that was geared toward learning about God’s heart for issues of injustice and racial inequality. Albern left the week feeling inspired to seek out areas of brokenness on campus and help the undergrad chapter enter into those issues well. It’s overwhelming to think of the ripple effect this week could have. Weeks like this help Mike and Annie to see what God has known all along: He is in control and transforming students and inviting them to be a part of his kingdom work in the world! From May 7-21, Mike and Annie have the opportunity to serve students from all over the midwest at Chapter Focus Week. This year has been different as they have each played a significant role in the preparation for CFW. One of Annie's jobs has been to assign the staffing for each of the seven weeks of camp. Mike has been working to help develop new evangelism curriculum.
Their first week at camp will be serving 23 students from Purdue, in particular working with a leadership team of eight students from the undergrad chapter. During their second week at camp they will work with students from the University of Illinois. Annie will be coordinating behind-the-scenes-details with the camp we are using, ensuring that students have the best experience possible. Mike will have an opportunity to observe the curriculum that he helped develop and provide feedback for next year. They can't wait to see how God will show up in the lives of students! |
