In the last year God has been opening doors to new parts of the campus at Purdue. Just last month we shared about the new ministry toward black students we launched. Since last spring God has also been opening doors for Mike to work with the Asian American [AA] community on campus. Mike was introduced to leaders from Cornerstone, a ministry affiliated with a local Korean church in West Lafayette. The ministry is without a full time staff, so Mike has been
meeting wtih student leaders to help them feel equipped and cared for. Early in February Mike got the opportunity to speak at their weekly gathering and call students to participate in evangelism [his favorite topic]. He brought Esther, an AA student from InterVarsity, to help recruit students to InterVarsity’s AA conference Released.
Clearly God was at work that evening, as 5 students from Cornerstone joined 5 students from Purdue IV in attending Released. The theme of the conference was Released from sin and shame. Released with gifts into mission. The students had the opportunity to explore who God made them to be. In one of the main sessions, the speaker invited students to lay communal and individual sins at the foot of the cross. Then they each came to their staff who handed them a gift they identified in the student. Mike felt honored by the opportunity to particpate in this significant moment for all of these students. Hyesoo, sophomore, and Esther, freshman, were particularly compelled by the conference to reach out to the AA community at Purdue. Mike is looking forward to partnering with them as they are hoping to launch a new small group to specifically reach out to this community! Praise God for students being motivated to reach new pockets of campus with the good news of Jesus!
