Mike can’t wait for students to get back to campus! The town feels empty and something is just not quite right when they aren’t around. Mostly, he is excited to have a core group of students that are bought into the vision. Returning students are excited to lead other students toward Jesus and his mission in the context of Purdue IV. In fact, this summer several IV students that have been around West Lafayette have been getting together each week to study Nehemiah together.
Mike is not sure how they chose to study Nehemiah, but he was eager to hear what they had been learning because Nehemiah focuses a lot on leadership. He’s heard that students have clung to the lessons on community and have thought about what it means to lead others spiritually. They have each stepped up different weeks to contribute to the study and help one another grow closer to God. They are living out our vision to, “reveal Jesus through authentic community”.
As we enter the school year we are launching several new opportunities for students to lead within the chapter. This can be both exhilarating and intimidating for staff as we let go of control and help set students up to succeed. The first main thing students will be leading this fall will be our new student outreach. They have been planning the events, organizing the food, and will be the first people that new students meet when they visit our booth at the activities fair. Students will also be leading missional groups that serve different spheres of influence around campus. Mike and Jess will be there to coach and encourage, especially at our back to school training camp [Aug 15-16]. At training camp we’ll be teaching these students the keys to leading their peers into mission. Ultimately, by launching these student leaders well we hope that we will continue to develop into a student-led ministry. Would you pray with us that these student leaders see Jesus’ transforming power in their own lives, and those they lead in the weeks to come?
